Burning Magnesium Lab

---Materials---
-safety goggles
-magnesium strips
-crucible with lid
-scale
-crucible holder
-Bunsen burner (and fuel for it, obviously)
-tongs
-distilled water
-electricity conductivity tester

---Procedure---
1. Make sure safety goggles are on. Mass the crucible without lid and record.
2. Take two or three magnesium strips and roll into ball. Place the ball into the crucible, mass again without lid, and record.
3. Put lid onto crucible and place crucible onto holder above Bunsen burner with tongs.
4. Turn on Bunsen burner fuel and light Bunsen burner. Adjust fuel intake so the top of the flame is just under the crucible.
5. Wait two minutes and take the lid off.
6. Wait for the magnesium to ignite. When the magnesium ignites, turn off the Bunsen burner. If the magnesium does not ignite use the tongs to take the magnesium into the top of the flame and ignite it. Place the magnesium back into the crucible and turn off the Bunsen burner.
Magnesium burning creates ultraviolet light, which is a hazard to the eyes. DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE BURNING MAGNESIUM.
7. Wait for crucible to cool off and mass without lid with burned magnesium still inside. Record.
8. Place distilled water into crucible with burned magnesium and stir. Use electricity conductivity tester to see if the water conducts electricity. Record.
9. Remove distilled water and burned magnesium into trash. Clean up station.

---Results---
crucible mass: 23.49 g
^ with magnesium: 23.57 g
after burn: 23.57 g
distilled water conducts: false

Burning Magnesium

Warnings!
the light from the burning magnesium is harmful to your eyes, never look directly at it!

Required Items:

1.)Crucible
2.)Bunsen Burner
3.)2 Strips of Magnesium(.11 grams)
4.)Safety Goggles
5.)Tongs
6.)Batteries/cables
7.)Distilled Water
8.)

Procedure:
First, you weigh the crucible without the magnesium in it, to see how much it weighs, our crucible weighed 22.03 grams without the lid on, then put crucible back on the scale and tare it, then put your two strips of magnesium in, this will show you how much your magnesium weighed. My group's magnesium weighed .11 grams. Then place the crucible with the magnesium on the Bunsen burner. Wait a couple minutes, if you don't see a flash, then your magnesium hasn't lit yet. To speed up the process, take the lid off of the crucible. Once this is done, wait a couple more minutes. If it still hasn't lit, take the tongs and pick the magnesium and put it directly into the top part of the flame. In about ten seconds it will light and flash white. Do not look at the flashing as it is harmful to your eyes. In the corner of your eye, lift the magnesium up, and drop it in the crucible. Turn the Bunsen burner off, because the magnesium burns hot enough, and the heat from the flame can ruin the crucible. Wait for your magnesium to blow out. Once this is done, let the magnesium cool down, then take the crucible off the Bunsen burner. Next, you need to put distilled water in the crucible, and stir it. Then take 2 wires, and a battery, and hold the wires to the battery and hold the ends in the water, if the light bulb on the wires lights up, it is conductive. If the light bulb doesn't light, it's not conductive. In our case, it wasn't conductive

Magnesium Lab

Materials Needed:

  • 1 crucible with a lid

  • 2 strips of magnesium

  • Bunsen Burner

  • 1 pair of tongs

Safety Precautions:

  • Wear goggles at ALL times

  • Have your hair pulled back

  • No baggy clothes (especially sleeves)

  • After the crucible is done heating, let it sit. It will be extremely hot.

  • Use the tongs appropriately. There is a groove in them to pick up the crucible.

  • DO NOT look directly at the burning magnesium. It sets off UV rays that damage eyesight.

Procedure:

  1. Mass the crucible before beginning the lab and record.

  2. Add two strips of magnesium and roll them into a ball. Place them in the crucible and mass again and record.

  3. Turn on the fire and place the crucible in the holder right above the flame. Make sure the lid to the crucible is ON.

  4. If the crucible begins to shake: See step 5. If not, continue to step 6.

  5. Remove the lid and DO NOT look into the crucible. Look out of the corner of your eye. Go to Step 7.

  6. Take out the magnesium with the tongs and hold directly over the flame. As soon as the white light shows, place back into the crucible but make sure to NOT look at the magnesium.

  7. Wait until the crucible cools down and mass again. Record.

  8. Add approxiametly 5ml of water.

  9. Stir the magnesium and water

  10. Grab christmas lights and put the two connector end into the water. Move them around and see if they conduct electricity.

Results

Mass before: 22.42

Mass w/ magnesium: 22.57

Mass after burning: 22.6

Also, the water with the magnesium conducted electricity, but only if the two conductors were very, very close to each other, but still not touching.

Book Questions:

  1. Our starting magnesium weighed .15 g and the ending magnesium weighed .18 g

  2. Exothermic reaction; mass should increase

  3. The magnesium is chemically reacting with the flames and the air.

  4. Nitrite and nitrate

  5. Oxygen and Magnesium

  6. It did conduct electricity, but barely

  7. The scales could've been off, the measurements could've been recorded incorrectly.

Real-World:

  1. The magnesium Ions help the nervous system

  2. It is used in antacids

Magnesium Lab

Items Needed:

1.Crucible 2.Bunsen Burner 3. Magnesium 4.Safety Goggles

Process:

  1. First we wieghed the crucible alone 23.65

  2. Then we added the magnesium to it and weighed it 23.72

  3. Then we put the crusible with the magnesium over the bunsen burner until the lid started to shake.

  4. our lid didnt shake so we had to do it by hand as you saw. as soon as the magnesium lit up you had to look out the corner of your eye because if u look straight at it it may do damage because of the ultra violet rays coming off of it.

  5. after it cooled down we used tongs and we put it on the balance scale the burnt magnesium weighed 23.65

we had an error because the weight was actually sappose to stay the same but it didnt ours went down because all of our magnesium didnt burn. yes or magnesium is conductive because the light bulbs lite up.

SUPPLIES

Crucible

Magnesium

Balance

Bunsen burner

Tongs

Goggles

PROCEDURE

First we put the Magnesium into the empty crucible. Then the Bunsen burner was turned on so that it could heat. We then took the tongs and grabbed the Magnesium and put it into the fire so that it could light. the Magnesium failed to light so we had to uncoil it a bit and try again. This it me was a success. Once the Magnesium was lit we used then had to put it back into the crucible to find our results.

RESULTS

MASS BEFORE- 35.70 grams

MASS AFTER- 35.8 grams

-Did not conduct electricity

QUESTIONS

1. Our starting mass was 35.70 grams and our ending mass was 35.8 grams.

2. The reaction was exothermic, and that means that the mass should go up. Our went up but not by much at all.

3. You know when you do the experiment because you can see the reaction taking place.

4. Nitrate and Nitrite

5. Oxygen because when the Magnesium was lit it turned a bright white.

6. No ours did not conduct any electric current.

7. You could have given the wrong mass from the start so everything could have been off. Simple mistakes are always happening.

1. Not in multivitamins

2. Used in antacids
