Magnesium Lab

Materials Needed:
Crucible
Safety Goggles
Bunsen Burner Distilled Water
Tongs
Crucible Holder
Magnesium Strips
Batteries and Cables to Test Electricity

Procedure:
1. Put your safety goggles on. Then mass the Crucible.
2. Take 2 strips of Magnesium and form a twisted ball with them.
3. Mass that in the the crucible.
4. Start the bunsen burner and place the crucible (with the lid on) with the magnesium inside on the triangle 7 cm above the flame.
5. Wait for the Magnesium to catch on fire. If it doesn't (like mine didn't) you need to light it by hand.
6. Once the Magnesium is on fire DO NOT LOOK AT THE CRUCIBLE because the UV rays are dangerous to our eyes.
7. Mass it once again after it cools down.
8. Fill Crucible with distilled water and stir.
8. Connect the batteries and the cables to see if the water conducts electricity.

Analyze and Conclude
1. Our starting Magnesium weighed .1 and didn't gain or lose any weight.
2. Exothermic reaction because the mass should have increased
3. Chemical Reaction with the air.
4. Nitrate and Nitrate
5. Oxygen and Magnesium
6. My Magnesium didn't conduct electricity.
7. Our scales could have been off.
Real World
1. Magnesium ions help the nervous system
2. Magnesium is used in antacids
