Items needed:
1.)Crucible
2.)Bunsen Burner
3.)2 Strips of Magnesium(.11 grams)
4.)Safety Goggles
5.)Tongs
6.)Batteries/cables
7.)Distilled Water
Procedure:
First, you weigh the crucible without the magnesium in it, our crucible weighed 22.03 grams without the lid on, then put crucible back on the scale. then zero the balance. then put your two strips of magnesium in, this will show how much the magnesium weighs. My magnesium weighed .11 grams. Then place the crucible with the magnesium on the Bunsen burner. Wait a couple minutes, if you don't see a flash, then your magnesium hasn't lit yet. To speed up the process, take the lid off of the crucible. Once this is done, wait a couple more minutes. If it still hasn't lit, take the tongs and pick the magnesium and put it directly into the top part of the flame. In about ten seconds it will light and flash white. Do not look at the flashing as it is harmful to your eyes. In the corner of your eye, lift the magnesium up, and drop it in the crucible. Turn the Bunsen burner off, because the magnesium burns hot enough, and the heat from the flame can ruin the crucible. Wait for your magnesium to stop burning then Once this is done, let the magnesium cool down, then take the crucible off the Bunsen burner. Next, you need to put distilled water in the crucible, and stir it. Then take 2 wires, and a battery, and hold the wires to the battery and hold the ends in the water, if the light bulb on the wires lights up, it is conductive. If the light bulb doesn't light, it's not conductive. In our case, it wasn't conductive
